Sunday Drive is excited to return this August with a new show format, in a new town! REUNION is an immersive art experience on a private farm just outside of Peterborough in Lakefield, Ontario. The show is running Friday and Saturday evenings throughout August 2019. Once again, we'll be arranging special buses from Toronto. We'll be polling you to figure out the best dates so be sure to vote!
Tickets are $20. Group rates are available - DM us on Facebook or Instagram.
After our last events, we wanted to take some time to reinvent Sunday Drive. While we were developing new projects, we met a group of artists who had just moved to a farm property in Douro-Dummer. They were sitting on a fantastic discovery that was full of possibilities for a truly impressive and meaningful show. The outcome of our collaboration is REUNION and we are excited to present it”, says Tania Thompson, Sunday Drive’s creative director. “We’re not providing too many details so that audiences get the most from the experience. This is definitely a show you need to experience for yourself.”
Working with a private farm presented some challenges to presenting a public event. Simple facilities like parking were not available so Sunday Drive incorporated solutions into the format of the show itself. For example, the show begins in Lakefield where a bus, hosted by the farm’s owners, is waiting to take visitors to REUNION, ten minutes away. “This short ride provides time for us to give visitors the full backstory of how REUNION came to be, to meet the artists who own the farm and deepen the experience they are about to have.” explains Thompson.
For Torontonians without their own cars, Sunday Drive is providing buses leaving from Toronto on specific nights. As with past events, these buses are exceptionally fun.
How the show evolved Many people have been asking us, but what is it? And although we’re trying to keep some mystery about it, here is a little more info... When were in the Kawarthas scouting for a location and it was suggested that we meet a couple who have a farm just outside Lakefield who, like Sunday Drive, are also into making and showing contemporary art in rural places. So of course we wanted to meet them. And when we did, they told us how they had discovered there was a history of artmaking on their property, that the previous owners had also been artists and, well, the full story was pretty special. So we began discussing how Sunday Drive could re-animate the story, the history of their farm. We brought in some of our favourite artists to help us and the result is REUNION. It’s a massive collaboration and truly reflects our goal to present contemporary art in unexpected places. We’re also very dedicated to process: creating opportunities for artists to meet each other, work together, and have a good time making art. REUNION is all of this.
The way it is unfolding is all we hope for when we do Sunday Drive events - filled with collaboration, crazy and inspiring ideas, and circumstances we couldn’t manufacture if we tried. We hope you enjoy it.
